7 Reasons to enjoy your current business stage

Regardless of where you’re at, there’s a reason to celebrate. But unfortunately, many owners focus on getting from here to there, forgetting to enjoy what’s right in front of them. The truth is that small business has limitations, and that’s OK!

Small business is the backbone of the Australian economy, contributing around $418 billion yearly (over 32% of the nation’s economy). So if you’re running a small business, thank you for investing your time, energy, inspiration, blood, sweat, and tears into making this one of the best places in the world to live.

We celebrate businesses as they grow and expand; countless business awards attest to that. But how about we take a moment to celebrate your small business where it’s at right now?

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

Seven reasons to celebrate your current business stage

Regardless of where you’re at, there’s a reason to celebrate. But unfortunately, many owners focus on getting from here to there, forgetting to enjoy what’s right in front of them.

The truth is that small business has limitations, and that’s OK! You can’t do everything or be all things to all people, and the sooner you accept that, the closer you’ll be to celebrating where you’re at now.

1. You have a business!

It doesn’t matter how big your business is; it takes courage to launch yourself, your idea, your product or your service into an unforgiving marketplace. No one can take that away from you, regardless of what happens next. Well done!

2. You're doing what you love!

The world is better off when you do what you love. You, being you and doing what you do best, is a glorious thing!

As Simon Sinek says, “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.”

3. You'll never have this moment again!

You’ll never be at this stage again. It might feel tough at times, but, at some point, you’ll look back and wistfully wish you’d appreciated this moment. Every phase has its challenges and rewards; the more you value each moment, the more likely you are to take positive steps forward.

4. You bring something unique to the world!

It doesn’t matter how many people offer what you offer; there’s only one you. You have a unique perspective on the world and a story to share through your business, and that’s worth celebrating!

5. You survived a global pandemic!

If your small business came through COVID-19, you deserve a standing ovation. That is no small feat. The things that limit small business helped many “pivot” (that dreaded word), survive, and many are back, flourishing and positioned to take advantage of this brave new world.

6. You bring needed solutions.

Small businesses are often better placed than large companies to respond to changing needs. They’re drivers of innovation, because they’re on the ground, listening to customers and coming up with new solutions to both new and old challenges.

7. You can't do everything!

It’s true, and that’s a great thing. Being in a small business allows you to do one thing and do it well. If you try to be all things to everyone, you’ll exhaust yourself and satisfy no one. But, on the other hand, if you can embrace your niche, you’ll find other small business owners doing their one thing well and discover the joy of collaboration.

Developing a culture of gratitude

Small businesses have their fair share of stresses, strains, uncertainty, and overwhelm. You can’t control everything that happens, but you can choose your focus. One of the best things you can do for yourself, your family, your business, and your customers is to develop a culture of gratitude.

"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."
